Record number of foreign residents

The number of foreigners residing in Madeira in December 2022 reached the highest value since 2008, at 11,793 people in a regional population of 253,259 inhabitants.

According to data released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), foreign residents represented 4.7% of the total population of the archipelago on December 31st.

DREM indicates that the majority are people holding residence permits, with only one holding a long-term visa.

Citizens born in Venezuela represent 19.7% of resident foreigners, followed by those from the United Kingdom (11.8%), Germany (9.4%), Brazil (9.2%) and Italy (5.5% ).

This Madeiran government service highlights the German community from this group of five nationalities because “it registered a greater increase (218 more people; +24.5%) in the number of foreigners holding residence permits”. In 2021, there were 888 German residents in the archipelago, a number that rose to 1,106 in 2022.

The Germans “were the main drivers of the increase in the foreign population recorded in the region between 2021 and 2022”, contributing 2.1 percentage points (p.p.) to the 13.3% increase.

In the following positions come nationals from the United Kingdom (1.7 p.p.), São Tomé and Príncipe (1.3 p.p.) and the United States of America (1.2 p.p.)

DREM also highlights that the number of foreigners of Venezuelan nationality fell by 1.3% between 2021 and 2022, from 2,353 to 2,323 people.
