Tourism remains a cornerstone of the economy, contributing approximately 13% of GDP annually. Key visitor markets—Italy, France, the UK, Germany, and the US—generate over half of tourism revenues. Greece competes with Spain, Italy and Turkey by leveraging natural beauty, culture, and renowned hospitality
However, this anticipated surge in tourism also brings to light challenges such as infrastructure strain and environmental concerns, particularly in popular destinations like Santorini and Mykonos. Addressing these issues is crucial to ensure sustainable growth and maintain the quality of the tourist experience.
In response, Greek authorities and stakeholders are emphasizing the importance of integrating sustainability principles into tourism development. This includes enhancing infrastructure, extending the tourist season, regulating short-term rentals, and promoting practices that respect local communities and the environment.
These strategic initiatives aim to balance the economic benefits of increased tourism with the need to preserve Greece’s natural beauty and cultural heritage for future generations.
