Record breaking Holiday Accommodation (AL) numbers
- 11 April, 25
In 2024, guests spent 854.1 million nights in short-stay accommodation in the European Union (EU) booked through Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia Group, or TripAdvisor, Eurostat reports. This figure represents an increase of 18.8% compared to 2023 (719.0 million nights), setting a new record.
With the exception of April, every month in 2024 saw a higher number of nights spent in short-term accommodation compared to the same period in 2023. The largest relative increases compared to 2023 occurred in March (+48%), May (+31.7%), August (+21.6%) and November (+21.5%). The atypical evolution of March and April (with a drop of 1.8%) is probably due to the fact that Easter was in March in 2024, while in 2023, it occurred in April.
The most popular regions for short-term accommodation booked via online platforms in Q3 2024 were Jadranska Hrvatska, Croatia (25.2 million nights, +6.0% compared to Q3 2023), Andalusia, Spain (17.2 million nights, +23.1%) and the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (15.6 million nights, +26.2%).
In the same quarter, among the top 20 regions, 6 were in France, 5 in Spain and Italy, 2 in Greece and 1 each in Croatia and Portugal.
In Portugal, the Algarve region was the most sought after by tourists opting for short-term accommodation, making it into the table of the 20 most sought-after destinations, with 6.07 million, followed by the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, with 4.4 million, and the North region, with 3.89 million.
