Greece Ranks Among Top 5 Travel Picks Across All Key Markets for Summer 2025
- 6 July, 25
According to the latest report from INSETE, the research arm of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), Greece is set to remain firmly among the top five summer travel destinations globally in 2025. This further solidifies its position as a Mediterranean powerhouse in the international tourism market.
Air Travel Capacity Increases, Greece’s Tourism Popularity Stays Strong
The rankings are based on international seat capacity data for scheduled flights during the 2025 summer season (March 30 to October 25). Greece’s total available airline seat capacity is expected to reach 28.5 million, marking a 5.2% increase from 27.1 million in 2024.
- The UK remains Greece’s largest air travel source market, with 5.7 million planned seats (up 3.6%), accounting for 20% of total capacity.
- Germany ranks second with 4.8 million seats (up 3.9%), representing 17% of total capacity.
While Greece ranks slightly lower in markets like the US and Switzerland (sixth place), it remains within the top five destinations in 12 out of the 14 surveyed countries — and ranks first in Israel, underlining its strong appeal in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Travel Enthusiasm Among Consumers Remains High
The findings are part of INSETE’s Market Outlook series, based on research conducted in Q1 2025 by GWI. The survey covered 14 key tourism markets that collectively contribute 75.2% of Greece’s inbound tourism revenue.
Surveyed countries include: Germany, the UK, the US, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Romania, Austria, Switzerland, Israel, Sweden, and Denmark.
Travel Intention Highlights:
- Switzerland, Austria (59%) and Italy (57%) show the strongest willingness to travel.
- Sweden (55%) also shows high travel interest.
- Travel intent is more cautious in the US, Israel, and Poland, where roughly 48%–50% of respondents intend to travel.
Although international travel remains dominant, domestic tourism still plays a role in countries such as the US, France, Italy, Poland, and Romania, largely due to strong local infrastructure and some economic factors.
2025 Travel Preferences and Decision Factors
The report finds that consumer travel decisions continue to depend heavily on:
- Good value for money
- Pleasant climate
- Relaxing environment
- Unique cultural experiences
Beach and resort-based travel ranks as the top choice, with over 49% of respondents selecting it as their preferred vacation type — a category where Greece excels.
Economic Outlook and Potential Challenges
While traveler enthusiasm remains strong, INSETE cautions that the European Commission’s economic growth forecast for 2025 is slightly below expectations, which could dampen tourism spending in certain markets.
- Denmark is one of the few countries projected to experience strong growth.
- In contrast, Austria’s economy is expected to shrink.
- Ongoing trade tensions between the US, China, and the EU add another layer of uncertainty to the global tourism spending outlook.
Air Connectivity and Consumer Interest Support Greece’s Tourism Growth
Despite a somewhat complex global economic outlook, Greece is well-positioned to sustain its status as a major global travel destination in 2025, thanks to:
- Robust air connectivity
- Ongoing improvements to the tourist experience
- Abundant cultural and natural resources
