Aenaon Metropolitan Park: Contractor in January 2026, Completion by 2028
- 29 November, 25
Greece’s largest urban redevelopment project — Aenaon Metropolitan Park — is progressing steadily according to a clear timeline. Speaking at a conference in Athens, Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias confirmed that the international tender is already underway. The contractor will be officially appointed in January 2026, with the entire project scheduled for completion by late 2028.
Project Once at Risk of Cancellation, Renewed EU Support in 2024
Hardalias noted that Aenaon had previously faced the risk of suspension due to delays and administrative challenges.
“The priority at the start of 2024 was to get the project back on track and ensure it could move into the next phase,” he said.
Through sustained efforts by the regional government, Attica regained the European Commission’s confidence and secured €370 million in funding, restoring a solid financial foundation for the project.
A 74.1-Hectare Park — The Largest Continuous Public Green Space in Attica

The Aenaon Park spans 741 stremmas (approximately 74.1 hectares) and will become the largest continuous public green area in the Attica region once completed.
Key design features include:
- 75% of the site dedicated to green space
- More than 4,000 trees
- Over 210,000 plants and shrubs
- Improved connectivity between the urban fabric and the coastline
- Fully open, non-exclusive public spaces
Integrated Walking, Cycling, Cultural and Ecological Experiences

Aenaon Park will offer:
- Walking and cycling paths
- Outdoor recreation areas
- Spaces for light cultural events
- Zones for environmental education and community engagement
These elements aim to create a natural landscape that promotes healthy living, outdoor activities, and ecological restoration.

Sustainable Operation: A Dedicated Management Body
Hardalias emphasized that long-term sustainability will rely on a joint management authority involving:
- Local municipalities
- National agencies
- Community organizations
- Citizen groups
Clear maintenance and usage guidelines will be established to ensure the park’s value remains strong over time. The design also incorporates flood-protection infrastructure and low-resource-consumption systems.
“Our goal is not just to build a park, but to ensure it remains truly ‘alive’—a central part of Attica’s urban transformation,” Hardalias said.

With the timeline now officially set, Aenaon Metropolitan Park is expected to become a flagship public landmark for Attica when it opens in late 2028.
