Life expectancy stabilises in Portugal

Life expectancy at birth increased in 2024 for the third consecutive year to 81.5 years in the European Union (EU), after declines recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Eurostat.
According to data released by the European statistical service, life expectancy increased in 2022 to 80.6 years, after the falls recorded in 2020 (80.4 years) and in 2021 (80.1 years) due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2023, it was 81.4 years, exceeding the 2019 value, before the pandemic hit Europe.
In 2024, life expectancy at birth for women in the EU reached 84.1 years (an increase of 0.1 years from 2023), while for men it was 78.9 years (an increase of 0.2 years).
Spain (84 years), Sweden (83.8) and Italy (83.7) had the highest life expectancies, whereas Bulgaria (75.8), Latvia (76.4) and Romania (76.5) had lower life expectancies, on average.

In Portugal, the indicator was 82.5 years, stable compared to 2023, with women living on average 82.5 years and men 79.7.
