Number of houses increases, but at “a much slower pace”

According to the Provisional Results of the 2021 Census, released this Thursday (December 16, 2021) by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), “the number of buildings intended for residential housing is 3,573,416 and the number of housing units 5,981,485, values that, compared to 2011, represent an increase of 0.8% and 1.7%, respectively”.

Portugal recorded “slight growth” in residential buildings and accommodation, but at a “much slower pace” than in previous decades, with 70% of the accommodation being occupied by the owner, although renting increased by 16% compared to 2011, according to INE.

Azores and the Algarve are the regions that registered “the biggest increases” in the housing stock, with the number of residential buildings growing by 1.7% and 1.1% and housing 3, 3% and 3.2%, respectively.

On the other hand, Tarouca, Penela and Coruche were the municipalities where there were “the most significant decreases”, with the number of accommodations varying between -10.0% and -4.6%.
