Athens Among Top Affordable Cities for Expats in 2025

As global talent mobility reshapes the landscape of work and life, Athens has emerged as a standout in the 2025 ranking of the most affordable cities for expatriates. According to a recent report by digital remittance service provider Remitly, the Greek capital ranks seventh globally in terms of relocation costs, making it an ideal choice for balancing quality of life with budget considerations.

The study evaluated over 40 popular international cities, taking into account key expenses such as visa fees, six months’ rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, and basic furniture.

Data shows that the total cost of relocating to Athens is approximately £5,703 (6,780 euros), including:

  • Visa fee: £156 (185 euros)
  • Average six-month rent: £2,545 (3,025 euros)
  • Basic furniture setup: £1,119 (1,330 euros)
  • Utilities (gas, electricity, etc.): £829.99 (987 euros)
  • Six-month grocery costs: £1,071.03 (1,272 euros)
  • Public transportation expenses: £117.95 (140 euros)

Top 10 Cities for Cost-Effectiveness Globally

Bangkok tops the list with a relocation cost of under £3,600 (around 4,200 euros), including:

  • Six-month rent: 1,750 euros
  • Utilities and internet combined: 445 euros
  • Basic furniture setup as low as: 455 euros

The Thai capital is also renowned for its blend of modern convenience and cultural heritage. Kuala Lumpur, Budapest, and Mexico City rank second to fourth, followed closely by Taipei, Istanbul, Tokyo, Málaga, and Valencia.
