Athens International Airport: Traffic increased by 8.7% in February

The number of flights at AIA during the first two months of 2025 amounted to 31,832, recording an increase of 8.2%.

International passenger traffic at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport is also recording high numbers at the beginning of the new year . As announced, passenger traffic at Athens Airport reached 1.75 million in February, recording an increase of 8.9% compared to the corresponding month in 2024. Both domestic and international passenger traffic exceeded 2024 levels by 2.3% and 11.9% respectively. Overall, during the first two months of the year , the airport’s traffic reached 3.59 million passengers, recording an increase of 11.7%. Passenger traffic, both domestic and international, increased by 3.6% and 15.3% respectively.

The company notes in its announcement that February 2024 had an extra day (leap year – 29 days). In addition, on February 28, no flights were operated in Greek airspace due to the nationwide general strike.

The number of flights at Athens International Airport during the first two months of 2025 amounted to 31,832, recording an increase of 8.2% compared to 2024. Domestic flights experienced a slight decrease of 2.1%, while international flights increased by 15.6% compared to the corresponding period of 2024.

It is recalled that in 2024, passenger traffic at Athens International Airport amounted to 31.85 million, an increase of 13.1% compared to 2023. In detail, both domestic and international passenger traffic exceeded 2023 levels by 7.3% and 15.7% respectively. Regarding the number of flights at Athens International Airport in 2024, it amounted to 268,301, recording an increase of 11.0% compared to 2023. Both domestic and international flights increased by 5.1% and 15.5% compared to 2023.

According to Eurostat data, in 2024, “Eleftherios Venizelos” Airport, for the first time in its history, ranks in the TOP 10 of flights in the 27 countries of the European Union. It is the eighth largest airport in the European Union in terms of number of flights for 2024. It ranked eighth, above Vienna’s Schwechat Airport (ninth place) and below Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (seventh place).

Athens International Airport recorded a total of 268,300 flights in 2024, an increase of 11% compared to 2023, when it had 241,600 flights. Of these, 109,388 were domestic and 158,913 were international. In addition, according to Eurostat data, Athens took first place in terms of unscheduled flights (charter type), showing the highest percentages of 5.5%, followed by Vienna with 4.6% and Madrid with 4.5%.
