Athens Ranks Among Europe’s Best Cities in Travel + Leisure’s 2025 Awards

Athens has earned a spot on Travel + Leisure’s “World’s Best Awards” list, ranking 14th among the top cities in Europe for 2025, as voted by the magazine’s readers.

Celebrated for its unique blend of ancient history and vibrant urban life, the Greek capital was praised as “the perfect-size city”, where walking its neighborhoods is both “delightful” and “cathartic”.

Voters highlighted Athens’ iconic archaeological landmarks such as the Parthenon and the Plaka district, along with its dynamic culinary scene and warm local hospitality.

“Athens is an ancient and historically significant city with fascinating archaeological sites all over town,” one reader noted.

The annual Travel + Leisure survey invites readers to rate their favorite destinations around the world based on cultural offerings, landmarks, food, friendliness, and overall experience.

Mediterranean destinations lead the list

Mediterranean destinations dominated this year’s list, despite high summer temperatures and peak-season crowds.

Italy and Spain led with multiple cities in the top rankings — including Florence, Rome, Granada, and Madrid — celebrated for their rich culture, gastronomy, and charm.

Other cities earning top spots included Lisbon, Porto, Prague, Lyon, Salzburg, and Istanbul, whose blend of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman heritage resonated with voters.
