Construction with a shortage of manpower: wages rise 5.4% in August

  • 18 October, 22

More building construction boosted construction output to 2.3% in August, INE data show. There are more jobs in the sector.

Building new homes is getting more and more expensive – up 12.6% in August. This is a scenario driven by the rise in the costs of construction materials, leveraged by the high inflation that is felt in Portugal. And also by the rise in labor costs, which has been fueled by the shortage of workers in the sector. As a result, wages in construction have been rising, having grown by 5.4% in August compared to the same period last year, points out the National Statistics Institute (INE) this Wednesday, October 12th.

What the data also shows is that there was a deceleration in the rise of wages and employment in construction, since the variations in the previous month were higher.
