Greece has been named the Best European Country in the 2025 Telegraph Travel Awards, earning the top spot in a vote by more than 20,000 readers of the UK publication.

First launched in 1998, the Telegraph Travel Awards are considered among the most influential in the UK travel industry. Readers vote across 20 categories, selecting their favorite destinations, airlines, hotels, and travel experiences based on the past year’s journeys. The 2025 award ends Italy’s 25-year run at number one, with Greece praised for its scenic islands, archaeological treasures, and wide appeal to travelers. Norway placed third in the European category.

“Greece’s victory in this award ends Italy’s 25-year reign at the top. And it is well deserved, for there is little at which the country does not excel,” noted The Telegraph’s travel editor, citing the “glorious” islands of the Aegean and Ionian Seas and Greece’s “visible” history, from the Acropolis in Athens to the ruins of Knossos on Crete.

The award was received by Eleni Skarveli, Head of the UK & Ireland office of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), during a ceremony in London.

The Telegraph, one of the UK’s leading media outlets, attracts over 600,000 digital subscribers and more than 12 million unique visitors to its travel section annually.
