Hotel Occupancy in Algarve Records Notable Growth in November

  • 12 December, 24

The Algarve region of Portugal experienced a significant increase in hotel room occupancy during November 2024, rising by 8.9% compared to the same period last year. According to the Association of Hotels and Tourist Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), the occupancy rate for the month stood at 43.3%, up from 39.8% in 2023. This figure aligns closely with pre-pandemic levels, such as November 2019, when the occupancy rate was 43.8%.

Market Insights and Key Contributors
Several international markets contributed to this growth. The Spanish market recorded a remarkable 40% increase, while the German and British markets grew by 11% and 7.4%, respectively. Domestic tourism also saw an annual rise of 6.7%. These figures reflect a broader recovery trend in the region’s hospitality sector, driven by targeted marketing and the Algarve’s appeal as a year-round destination.

Stays and Visitor Patterns
The average length of stays remained consistent with last year at four nights. However, specific markets showed longer visits, such as Swedish tourists averaging 9.5 nights and Dutch visitors staying 7.4 nights on average. These trends highlight the Algarve’s diverse appeal, catering to both short-term travelers and long-duration holidaymakers.

Comparative Growth and Challenges
The steady recovery of the Algarve’s tourism sector mirrors efforts across Portugal to rejuvenate the hospitality industry after the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. AHETA’s data underscores the importance of maintaining momentum through enhanced services and infrastructure investments, particularly as competition within the European tourism market intensifies.
