Portugal and Greece are in the top 10 countries for comfortable retirement, according to U.S. News

Whether for financial reasons or simply for a change of scenery or lifestyle, some people opt to move overseas when they retire. And factors like a country’s cost of living, quality of life and cultural accessibility can be key considerations when deciding where to settle down later in life.

According to U.S. News, a companion to the overall 2023 Best Countries rankings, the 2023 Best Countries for a Comfortable Retirement rankings are drawn from a global survey of more than 17,000 people and highlight countries.

Portugal is considered the second-best country for a comfortable retirement, up from 4th in 2022. It’s considered the most affordable of the top five countries, as well as a top nation for its pleasant climate. Survey respondents also see Portugal as a culturally accessible country. Along with a relatively low cost of living, Portugal has a tax regime that can be beneficial for expats.

In top 10, Greece is ranked the ninth best country for a comfortable retirement, up from 13th in 2022.  Located in southeastern Europe, Greece as an independent nation is young, existing since the 19th century. Its civilization, however, is one of history’s oldest and most influential, credited with creating the concept of democracy as well as the ancient Olympic Games, and laying Western foundations in science, the arts and philosophy.

In 2023, Switzerland has become the first in comfortable retirement rakings. It is one of the world’s wealthiest countries and has been well-known for centuries for its neutrality. Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Canada, Sweden, Italy Denmark are also in the top 10 countries for this category.
