“Travel back in time” at Medieval Market
- 18 May, 23
Almodôvar is a town and a municipality in the District of Beja, Portugal. The village of Almodôvar will “travel back in time” over the weekend, with the Medieval Market, which after five years returns to the Alentejo town with “dances, weapons tournaments and merriment”.
The 12th edition of the Almodôvar Medieval Market, which takes place between Friday and Sunday, is an initiative of the City Council, in partnership with other entities, which takes visitors “back” to 1285, the year in which King D. Dinis elevated the town to a municipality.

“It is a very dear event for people from Almodôvar and the fair that most involves the entire population”, said councilwoman Ana Carmo, who is in charge of Culture in the municipality.
According to the mayor, the event’s program includes a street market, historical recreations, performing arts, music and dances from the medieval era, with “many tourists and other audiences from neighbouring municipalities” expected in Almodôvar.
Ana Carmo also said that the initiative aims, in addition to the usual historical recreation, “to boost and leverage” trade, hotels and restaurants in the Alentejo municipality, in the district of Beja.
The 12th edition of the Almodôvar Medieval Market is free to attend and starts at 5 pm on Friday.
