US overtakes China to invest in Portugal

Chinese investment fell 60 percent last year, to 20.7 million euros. India has risen to third place in the ranking.
There are variations in investment ratings through the golden visa, by nationality. The US has overtaken China in first place and India joins the TOP 3. Brazil continues to increase investment through its Residence Permit for Investment (ARI) program.
In the first quarter of last year, according to the most recent data from Services, China led the ‘top 5’ by countries of the Residence Permit for Investment (ARI) program, with funds raised 51.7 million euros and 100 golden visas granted.
In the first three months of this year, the United States led the table, with China in second place, with cumulative investment through the end of March of 20.7 million euros, down more than half (59.9%. ) compared to the same period in 2021.
According to SEF data, in the first quarter:
Chinese investment through the golden visa fell 60%, year-on-year in 2021, to 20.7 million euros. And 43 golden visas have been issued to citizens of Chinese nationality.
Investment from the United States more than tripled in this quarter, compared with the same period in 2021, to 25.1 million euros, corresponding to 52 golden visas. A year ago US investment raised through a ‘golden’ visa was 6.8 million euros (13 ARIs issued).
India ranked third in the first quarter, with an investment of more than eight million euros and 18 golden visas awarded. Last year, the country wasn’t in the top five in the first quarter.
Followed by Brazil , the investment capital increased this year increased by 1.7% year-on-year to 11.4 million euros and were granted 17 ARIs. In the first quarter of 2021, Brazil was responsible for 11.2 million euros raised through the golden visa, with 18 residence permits issued.
In fifth place this year is South Africa, with a cumulative investment up to March of more than 7.6 million euros and 15 golden visas.
In the first quarter of last year, Russia (5.2 million euros invested and 10 ARIs issued) and Pakistan (4.6 million euros and also 10 golden visas issued) were in the top five list.
In the first three months of this year, seven golden visas were issued to citizens of Russian nationality, “all in January”, according to the SEF, and two visas to citizens of Ukraine. Following a directive from the Portuguese Government, on February 26, Portugal suspended the issuance of ARIs to Russian citizens, the organization recalled.
