World Travel Awards: Portugal is the best European tourist destination for 2023

World Travel Awards were held in the Black Sea resort and port city of Batumi, Georgia. The event was founded in 1993, with the awards presented annually by an international jury of hospitality experts and peers, mainly from the World Travel and Tourism Council.
Portugal shines again as Europe’s Best Destination at World Travel Awards for the second year running. This is the sixth time the country has taken the crown in this category.
Portugal’s coastline, adorned with pristine beaches and rugged cliffs, is a testament to the country’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty. The Algarve region, with its golden sands and azure waters, has long been a sun-soaked haven for beach lovers and water enthusiasts alike.
According to rankings by the World Travel Awards, Portugal has collected a total of 22 awards this year from the north to the south of the country, following:
- Porto: Europe’s Best City Break Destination
- Lisbon: Europe’s Best Island Destination
- Algarve: Europe’s Best Beach Destination
- Madeira: Europe’s Best Island Destination
- Paiva Walkways in Arouca: Europe’s Leading Adventure Tourist Attraction 2023

On the other hand, TAP Air Portugal also received two awards: Best European Airline flying to Africa and South America.
This recognition at the World Travel Awards is a sign of Portugal’s resilience and innovation in the face of global challenges. The country’s commitment to sustainable tourism, combined with its warm hospitality, positions Portugal as a leader in the travel sector.
