According to Sapo News, one year after the change to the law on foreigners, the Portuguese Government issued 2,600 visas to “digital nomads” outside Europe in this period.

The Portuguese Government issued 2,600 visas to “digital nomads” outside Europe in this period, with North Americans leading the number of licenses obtained, according to information provided by “Público” on Friday 3 November.

According to data sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to “Público”, “the nationalities with the most visas issued were, in this order, citizens of the USA, Brazil and the United Kingdom”.

The law that created visas for digital nomads in Portugal came into force on October 30th last year. The diploma, which created the possibility for a professional from another country to work remotely in Portugal for a year, changed the so-called Foreigners Law.

Portugal has just made it an even more exciting time to be a digital nomad. Offering the first digital nomad visa of its kind in Europe, applications start on October 30, three months after the Portuguese government amended immigration law.

Remote workers can apply for a one-year temporary stay visa or a residency permit that can be renewed for up to five years. Applicants need to make at least €2,800 per month a month, four times the minimum wage in Portugal.
