Greece, China Discuss Infrastructure Investment to Boost Piraeus Port
- 13 April, 25
Maritime Minister Vassilis Kikilias highlighted the need for Chinese investments to enhance passenger mobility at the Port of Piraeus during talks with China’s Ambassador to Greece Fang Qiu.
During discussions, the minister noted that such investments should focus on key infrastructure upgrades, including water supply systems, WiFi connectivity, the construction of additional passenger stations and shelters, enhanced security features, and better route information services.
“The daily experience of passengers at the Piraeus Port must be improved without delay,” Kikilias said, noting that these improvements should be implemented quickly and cost-effectively to benefit both travelers and the broader Piraeus community.
Highlighting China’s commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation with Greece, Ambassador Qiu expressed support for the proposed upgrades, noting they align with the principles of social responsibility.
Within the framework of COSCO’s investment in the port, China remains firmly committed to the ongoing development and enhancement of port infrastructure.
On the sidelines of their meeting, officials discussed the involvement of Greek companies in marine equipment production, as well as the potential for Greek-Chinese joint ventures in shipbuilding within Greece.
Greece and China share a long history of collaboration during major international crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the evacuation of tens of thousands of Chinese citizens from Libya by Greek ships.
As leading players in global shipping, further strengthening their maritime cooperation is expected to deepen bilateral ties even more.
