  • 5 December, 23

Following the announcement on November 27th, the European Commission handed out the awards for the most innovative cities in the bloc at a ceremony in Marseille (France), which was the winner of last year’s edition. This award aims to recognize cities with inclusive innovation ecosystems.

Lisbon has won the title of European Capital of Innovation, a distinction awarded by the European Commission and bringing with it a ‘prize’ of €1 million.

According to the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas believes the award comes “thanks to the Unicorn Factory” and the “incredible work” the city has achieved over the last two years in attracting “more than 54 technology companies” and “12 unicorns” (companies that reach a value of $1 billion). He says the money means Lisbon can “invest even more, invest in innovation that changes people’s lives”.
