The international situation affects the purchase of a second home in Portugal: how?

Miguel Poisson, CEO of Portugal’s Sotheby’s Realty, admits the international situation “definitely affects” second home sales in our country. This means that some expats residing in parts of the world, where there are geopolitical tensions, are looking to buy a second home in Portugal. And these international investors come from countries like:

USA: “Americans, especially Californians, are looking for a lifestyle very similar to what they have in California, close to the ocean, beaches and surf, but in a safe environment. For American investors, there is now one more reason to buy a house in Portugal, which is the current appreciation of the dollar against the euro, as it makes real estate prices in Portugal Housing becomes more affordable,” adds David Moura-George.

Brazil: “The new wave of Brazilian investment in national real estate started just before the election.,” said Athena Advisors Portugal general manager;

Europe: regarding the war between Russia and Ukraine, “Portugal benefits from its geographical position in Europe, being the European country farthest from conflict” and also makes use of the “social structure and political stability, which is appreciated at the European level right now,” admits Portugal’s CEO Sotheby’s Realty. That’s why some families living in countries near conflict are taking a plan B and looking to Portugal as their final destination, to live away from the center of instability.

UK: “British, who have always invested in Portugal, are also increasingly actively looking for a home in our country, as a result of Brexit and government instability that leaving The European Union has brought, and will continue to bring, to the nation in the years to come,” David Moura-George admitted in a statement to Idealists/News.

Looking at 34 OECD countries – an organization with a total of 38 Portugal is the best country to buy a second home, scoring 7.27 on a total of 10. Thus, this national territory has surpassed countries such as Hungary, Turkey, Czech Republic and Estonia, which made it into the top 5 best destinations to buy a second home.
