Demand for properties has adapted to the current context of uncertainty, marked by the loss of purchasing power and high interest rates on bank loans, with an increase in demand for housing in the peripheral areas of large cities, especially Lisbon, as they have more affordable prices.

According to data from idealista, the municipalities that surround the capital are the 17 most sought after places to buy a house in 2023, despite more than half of these municipalities offering median prices above 300 thousand euros.

Looking at the ranking of the 50 most popular municipalities to buy a house in Portugal (and which have an offer of more than 500 properties for sale), the first eight are located in the district of Lisbon and are bordering the capital.

Odivelas is the most sought after municipality to purchase housing, followed by Oeiras, Amadora, Lisbon and Vila Franca de Xira. These are the municipalities that show the greatest demand pressure among the 50 municipalities preferred by buyers and which have a high supply of homes for sale.

The 17 most popular municipalities for purchasing housing in Portugal are located close to the capital, either in the district itself or in neighbouring districts, such as Setúbal and Santarém, which are about an hour’s drive away from Lisbon.
