The occupancy rate in hotels in Porto and the North of Portugal is around 75% for Carnival and Valentine’s Day combined with mini-holidays is helping to boost bookings.

Carnival in Portugal is a traditionally festive season, but as it is not officially a holiday, this truth contributes to the demand not being as high as in other festive seasons, namely Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The Carnival is a lively, fun, colorful celebration, and has plenty of food. Especially, one of the reasons why the Portuguese tourism market is growing on this occasion is because this year Valentine’s Day “is attached to Carnival Day”. This is a very meaningful occasion for couples and families to be together to celebrate these special occasions.

In Portugal, Mercan Group is the pioneer and leading Hotel Development Group in the tourism sector. For Carnival and Valentine’s Day, Mercan Hotels has attracted a large number of tourists booking to stay. At Casa da Companhia – IHG Vignette Collection, located on Rua das Flores, in the heart of downtown Porto, the occupancy rate is at 66%, with Saturday approaching 73%. This hotel used to be a head Quarter of Real Companhia Velha, the first exporting wine company in Porto for Port Wine, and covered the 5-star hotel. This is the 3rd five-star hotel in Porto. With high-end boutique feel, Casa da Companhia offers 40- unique rooms and suites. The hotel also provides full 5-star standard amenities such as a restaurant, spa, fitness center, and bar in Porto.

In addition, one of Mercan’s Hotels has opened is Fontinha Hotel – Trademark Collection by Wyndham, near Rua de Santa Catarina, the traditional shopping street in Porto, it is also at an occupancy rate of around 65%, with bookings reaching 75% for Saturday night of Carnival. This is a four-star boutique hotel that offers a warm, bold, and geometric atmosphere on the outside, clean, simple, and refined on the inside. The hotel provides 49 rooms that adopt a warm and “kinetic” design. Furthermore, the common areas have been developed to make you feel at home, the bar is a cozy space with industrial-chic line that invites you to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city and feel at home.

According to the president of Tourism of Porto and North of Portugal (TPNP), Luís Pedro Martins, He believes that Portugal’s tourism market will grow in 2024, just like in 2023, Porto and North ended the year with 6.9 million guests with 15% more than in 2022 and 13.3 million overnight stays, the highest national growth (14.9%).
