Tourist revenues reach new highs again

Tourist revenue in September totalled 2,789.01 million euros and rose 16.7% compared to the same month last year, reaching the highest value ever for the ninth month of the year, according to data revealed by Banco de Portugal (BdP).

The data shows that tourist revenues in September, which are based on spending by foreign tourists in Portugal, were also above that recorded in the same month of 2019, growing 37.6% compared to the September before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In other words, tourist revenues grew by 399.32 million euros compared to September 2022 and 762.03 million euros compared to the same month before the pandemic and which was considered a year of records for national tourism.

In the statement accompanying the figures the BdP highlights that exports under the Travel and Tourism heading amounted to “2,789 million euros, the highest value in the series for the month of September”, contributing decisively to exports from Services Balance rose 11.7% in September.

September’s results are historic and become even more positive because they follow the traditional summer months, namely July and August, in which tourist revenues reached, respectively, 3092.00 and 3923.91 million euros, showing growth of 9.2% and 10.7% compared to the previous year. Compared to the same months in 2019, these indicators increased by 35.4% and 31.5%, respectively.
